Irish Soda Bread

Ingredients
- 4 ea. cups all-purpose flour
- 4 ea. tbsp. white sugar
- 1 ea. tsp. baking soda
- 1 ea. tbsp. baking powder
- ½ ea. tsp. salt
- 1 ea. cup buttermilk
- ½ cup of margarine or butter, softened
- 1 ea. egg
- ¼ cup of butter, melted
- ¼ cup buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F
- Lightly grease a baking sheet, or cover with parchment paper
- In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and margarine (or butter).
- Stir in 1 ea. cup of buttermilk and egg.
- Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead slightly.
- Form dough into a round and place on the prepared baking sheet.
- In a small bowl, combine melted butter with ¼ cup of buttermilk and brush the loaf with this mixture.
- Use a sharp knife to cut an “X” into the top of the loaf.
- Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean, 45 – 50 minutes.
- Continue brushing the loaf during cooking, every 10 minut
